CHRONIC ILLNESS MASKING (yes, I am guilty as charged)

  • Forcing yourself to keep plans even when you feel awful
  • Saying “I’m fine” when you’re anything but
  • Laughing to hide brain fog or confusion
  • Over explaining or justifying why you can’t do something
  • Hiding mobility aids or medicine out of embarrassent
  • Silently struggling because asking for support feels too vulnerable
  • Powering through when you need rest
  • Minimizing your symptoms so you don’t seem dramatic
  • Pretending something isn’t bothering you
  • Acting “normal” so no one worries
  • Apologizing for needing help
  • Smiling when you’re in pain
