This type of pain can result from muscle weakness, spasticity, imbalance, and the physical challenges of living with MS. Musculoskeletal pain can also stem from prolonged immobility, spasms, and compensatory movements to adapt to MS-related symptoms.
If you have leg weakness, it’s likely you do not have the same gait, or walk that you did before MS. You may swing your leg or hike up your hip to avoid tripping. Or you may have trouble lifting your toes up when you walk and catch your toes on things and trip. These are called compensatory gaits and they may cause discomfort – often in the hip and/or back.
Tightness or stiffness of the muscles is called spasticity. Spasticity will alter walking and cause pulling on the joints. This can result in pain typically in the ankles, knees, hips and back. Also, a fall because of muscle weakness or spasticity can cause injury and pain.
Stretching is crucial for individuals with Multiple Sclerosis. Stretching helps manage spasticity, improves flexibility and range of motion, and promotes over all well-being. It can also help prevent shrinking or shortening of muscles.
