Bladder dysfunction in MS

Bladder dysfunction occurs in at least 80% of MS patients. A healthy bladder is important to your overall health and quality of life. Bladder symptoms occur when MS lesions block or delay the transmission of nerve signals in areas of the central nervous system that control the bladder and urinary muscles. This can cause spastic (overactive) bladder that is unable to hold the normal amount of urine or a bladder that does not empty properly ( and retains some urine in it.)

I have been living with my dysfunctional bladder for years. I’ve had many infections and antibiotic treatments in the past. Over time, I have learned to successfully manage symptoms with lifestyle modifications. Lifestyle modifications include: adequate fluid intake up to about an hour before bedtime, bladder training and planned voiding. I also take steps to be prepared when out and about. I plan frequent stops, use and carry discreet protection, wear easily removable clothes and have a backpack I take with me containing a change of clothes, underwear, wipes, whatever might be needed!
