Monitoring the disease course

Like many, my disease started as elapsing-remitting. At the time, (1989) Solu-medrol was the steroid used as a disease modifying treatment. Again like many, my relapsing- remittent MS progressed to Secondary Progressive (SPMS).

  • If you have SPMS that is active, your MS care provider might talk about starting a disease -modifying treatment (DMT) to reduce the risk of a relapse.
  • If you have SPMS that is active and progressing despite the treatment, your care provider might talk to you about switching to a more aggressive treatment strategy.
  • If you have SPMS that is not active but is progressing with increased disability, you and your provider might focus on rehabilitation strategies to help improve your function and mobility, as well as to promote safety and independence.
  • If you have SPMS that is stable and not active or progressing, you might focus on rehabilitation and other symptom management strategies to help you maintain function.
